How we came to be......
My name is Robyn Flynn, I live in the western suburbs of (Sydney) NSW
I decided to start a charity based organisation to donate underwear to children in need all over Australia.
I was inspired by an episode of the Oprah show about one women who started collecting children’s pyjamas for kids doing it tough in an orphanage she was volunteering in. Now 5 years down the track she has collected and donated over 87,000 pairs of pyjamas.
I have been raising money for charities for some time but this idea made me think of the bare necessities for kids in my own country.
So I decided to start at the bottom “so to speak”. “Hence the undies project”.
I felt this was an item most people take for granted that everyone has 1/2 a dozen or so in there drawers. But after speaking to children based charities I found this is definitely NOT the case.
You hear so many stories from people that make you realise you are doing the right thing. For example;
"Why are you wearing you undies inside out" the little boy answered isn't it wednesday ? - I wear them monday & tuesday the right way & wednesday & thursday the other way. Or the forster childen that come with nothing, some times two or more kids with one pair of undies between them, or the kids that have huge holes in there underwear and are embrassed to tell anyone.
There are many many more stories like this, hard to imagine I know but it is happening
With help from my work colleagues at Amcor Fibre Packaging at Smithfield NSW and inspiration from the staff at Stewart House we raised enough money to buy over 300 pairs of Undies for our first donation in May 2008
Going forward:
We are hoping to attract sponsors to help keep up a steady supply of undies.
We currently only have enough resources to help a few charities, but we are hoping to help many, many more with new sponsors and support. Even someday reach out to the rest of the world.
